THEN WHAT ARE FACIAL FILLERS?

Collagen, along with elastin, are fibers that lie in your dermis (bottom layer of skin). Collagen fibers create a framework for your skin so that it stays tight and wrinkle-free. Elastin allows your skin to bounce back to avoid sagging and skin laxity. 

That all sounds great, right? Well, here’s the catch. 

Over time, collagen and elastin breaks down, and your body decreases the production of those fibers. The main culprit behind the destruction is, you guessed it, the sun. 

Harmful UVA and UVB rays penetrate the skin with ionizing radiation, which damages the skin. You may not have noticed the effects of too much fun in the sun right away, but after you hit your mid 20s the sun damage may have become clearer. As the years pass, the lack of collagen and elastin leads to deeper wrinkles, sagging skin, and facial volume loss. Before you know it, you may wake up one day and not only feel older, but look older too. 

Now cue in facial fillers.
