I'm Nervous About My Dermaplaning Procedure: Can You Help?

A dermaplaning facial treatment removes dead skin cells and fine hairs from your face by using a very fine blade. Read on to learn what you can expect from a dermaplaning session, so you can feel confident going into your treatment.

Almost everyone experiences frustrating skin issues, such as dullness, acne, and wrinkles, at some point in their lives. Did you know that a well-known skin treatment can assist with all of these issues?

Dermaplaning, which involves scraping the skin gently with a scalpel, is an anti-aging therapy that can reduce breakouts and the appearance of scars. This is one of the services provided by David Reeves, MD, FACOG and the team at Medical Aesthetics & Laser in The Woodlands, Texas.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is an exfoliating therapy that uses a scalpel to remove dead skin cells and scar tissue from the face. Additionally, the exfoliating blade is used to remove the short, soft hairs on the face known as peach fuzz.

Dermaplaning, when performed properly by a skincare professional or dermatologist, can help eliminate acne scars and fine wrinkles, combat hyperpigmentation, and balance out skin tone. This exfoliating treatment can leave you with smoother, more youthful, and brighter skin.

Patients of any skin type who want to get rid of dull and dry skin, acne scars, sun exposure marks, and fine lines can consider this treatment.

What happens in a dermaplaning session?

Because dermaplaning involves using a scalpel, it’s normal to feel nervous about the treatment. Rest assured that dermaplaning is a safe, effective, and pain-free method of skin rejuvenation. It involves no cutting. Instead, our team gently scrapes the surface of your skin using quick strokes, while holding the skin taut.

We'll start your treatment by cleaning and drying your face. We usually treat one side of the face first, beginning with the brow or jaw, and then the other. We’ll then finish your treatment by administering a serum or moisturizer as well as sunscreen.

What does dermaplaning feel like?

You can expect to feel the blade crossing your skin. This feeling is similar to what it feels like when shaving with a razor. As the scalpel blade passes the top layer of your skin, you may hear a sound. However, you won’t be bothered, and your skin will never be pierced.

You’ll be comfortably reclined during your appointment. Many patients find this to be a relaxing and pleasant experience, and some even fall asleep during their sessions.

How long does a dermaplaning session take?

This treatment will take no more than an hour, and you can resume your regular routine immediately after without any physical restrictions. Some patients arrange this treatment during their lunch break.

Your skin may appear somewhat pink immediately following your appointment, but this will fade rapidly. Wearing sunscreen and limiting excess sun exposure is crucial following dermaplaning treatment, when your skin may be more sensitive.

Dermaplaning is an excellent treatment for rejuvenating the skin. After your treatment, you can expect to enjoy a radiant glow, with healthier, younger-looking skin, and an improved complexion.
