Traditional microneedling uses a handpiece device with tiny, disposable needle tips to create micro-channels on the skin’s surface. These controlled injuries trigger the body’s natural healing response.
Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling, like Scarlet RF, delivers even more benefits than traditional microneedling thanks to the added RF energy that penetrates into the skin. This energy is emitted from the tips of the needles at specific depths to deliver all the effects of traditional microneedling, with the added benefit of enhanced skin tightening and collagen stimulating results. Think of it as microneedling on steroids!
In order to achieve this, the RF energy emitted by the needles safely heats the dermis layer of the skin to 60°C (140°F) to encourage fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin to give the skin a visibly firmer, smoother appearance.
Besides the increased collagen and elastin production, Scarlet RF’s ability to keep the skin surrounding the treated area intact minimizes the downtime from your RF microneedling treatment. Most of our clients look great within 12 to 24 hours.

One of the best things about RF microneedling is that it is suitable, safe and beneficial for all skin types and complexions. It is important to note that results are not instant. We recommend a series of treatments in order to fully address your concerns.

CONSIDER ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS IF…
RF microneedling may not be ideal for everyone all the time. If you have current breakouts, open wounds, psoriasis or eczema, or have recently had radiation therapy, there may be better options for you here at Medical Aesthetics & Laser than RF microneedling.
RF microneedling is also not recommended for pregnant women or those who have trouble healing.
DO AT-HOME DERMAL ROLLERS PRODUCE THE SAME RESULTS AS RF MICRONEEDLING WITH SCARLET RF?
Not even close. Microneedle rollers do not produce the same results you would expect from a professional treatment.
While at-home microneedle dermal rollers are sometimes used to enhance the effects of your topical serums and moisturizers, they don’t come close to matching the results of professional RF microneedling.
Our equipment uses perfectly spaced, conductive microneedles that emit high-energy radiofrequency waves to penetrate the skin deeper and more evenly. Scarlet RF is a much more aggressive (and therefore more effective) RF microneedling treatment. Performing an abrasive treatment like this at home, rather than in a sterile clinical environment, significantly increases your chance for infection or scarring.
According to the American Academy of Dermatologists, you may be able to, at best, achieve a brighter complexion with dermarolling devices. However, do not expect to use one of these at-home rollers to stimulate collagen production or treat any lines or wrinkles like you would with RF microneedling at Medical Aesthetics & Laser.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN RF MICRONEEDLING TREATMENT?
CONSULTATION
All Medical Aesthetics & Laser clients first receive a skin consultation from one of our experienced aestheticians to evaluate your skin type and features. Here, we will discuss your goals for RF microneedling and walk you through the procedure(s) and treatment plan we recommend and address any of your remaining concerns.
PRE-PROCEDURE
Before your appointment for RF microneedling in Rochester, we ask that you:
- Discontinue using any topical antibiotics products for 3 to 5 days before your appointment.
- Avoid anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and Advil for 3 days.
- Do not have any BBL or laser procedures and do not tan or go in the sun without SPF protection for 2 weeks.
- Avoid blood-thinners like aspirin, fish oil, or vitamin E supplements for 3 to 4 days prior to your treatment. If you are taking these under direction of a physician, discuss with them before discontinuing use.
PREPPING THE TREATMENT AREA
To begin the RF microneedling procedure, we will apply a topical numbing cream to the treatment area to minimize any discomfort you may experience.
RF MICRONEEDLING
Using the latest fractional radiofrequency technology, our Scarlet RF microneedling device evenly treats your skin. The session typically lasts about 30 minutes, during which you will feel slight heat and light pressure on the treated area that most clients tolerate very well.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTERWARDS
There is no required downtime with Scarlet RF microneedling. You are free to return to your regular activities after your treatment. However, we often recommend that you keep the treated skin very clean and unwashed until the following day. We also recommend taking the evening off from social activities and refraining from makeup or skincare treatments for 24 hours post-treatment.
DOES RF MICRONEEDLING HURT?
Thanks to the topical numbing cream we apply before the treatment, most discomfort is minimized. Following the RF microneedling procedure, your skin may be red and inflamed with some pinpoint bleeding. Clients report their skin feels as though they had a sunburn for 12 to 24 hours after the microneedling treatment is performed.
Because Scarlet RF delivers energy below the surface of the skin, little to no downtime is expected, unlike other aesthetic laser treatments which can require you to take off work for days, depending on your skin’s sensitivity.
WHEN WILL RESULTS OF RF MICRONEEDLING BE SEEN?
While you will notice visibly brighter and tighter skin from your first RF microneedling session at Medical Aesthetics & Laser, most clients achieve the best results after a series of 3 to 4 treatment sessions.
While both methods show immediate results, the collagen and elastin-boosting benefits of using Scarlet RF vs. traditional microneedling will continue to improve for 3 to 6 months post-treatment, due to the radiofrequency technology in the needles. Results can also vary depending on how quickly your skin cells regenerate and produce new collagen and elastin.
After your initial treatments to achieve the results you desire, we recommend scheduling a maintenance treatment every 6 to 12 months to ensure the results of your RF microneedling treatment are sustained.
