What is Kybella?

Kybella is a fat removal treatment. More specifically, it’s an injectable cosmetic made of synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps break down fat.

During Kybella treatment, deoxycholic acid is injected into strategic areas beneath your chin. Kybella permanently destroys the targeted fat cells, eliminating your double chin and making your jawline slimmer.

Am I a candidate for Kybella?

To qualify for Kybella injections, you must be at least 18 years old and in good physical health. Tell your provider if you’ve been diagnosed with any health problems, such as a bleeding disorder or infection. These issues won’t necessarily prevent you from undergoing Kybella treatment, but they can increase the risk of complications, so we must be aware. 

Likewise, tell us if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are, you must hold off on Kybella until after you give birth or your baby is weaned.

What to expect during Kybella treatment

Kybella treatment is quick with minimal downtime. Most appointments last 30 minutes. 

If we determine you’re a good candidate, our providers examine your neck and the area beneath your chin. The provider will  ask about your treatment goals and carefully mark each injection site. 

 Kybella will then be injected into strategic areas under your chin. Most people receive 10-20 injections per session, but you may need more or less depending on your goals.

After administration of the injections, you’ll be provided with aftercare instructions. For example, applying an ice pack to the treated areas can help reduce swelling and limit discomfort. Avoid strenuous activities, like exercise for at least 48 hours, and steer clear of other cosmetic procedures, such as chemical peels or facials, for at least two weeks.

Will I need more than one Kybella appointment?

Yes. However, the number of Kybella appointments you receive will depend on your goals and the amount of under-chin fat treated. Some people only need two or three treatments, but you may need more. In fact, most people (about 59% of patients) undergo six Kybella treatments to achieve their desired results.

The provider monitors your results throughout treatment, adjusting your care plan as needed.

What to expect post-Kybella treatment

Kybella is one of the few cosmetic treatments that provides lasting results. After your injections, the deoxycholic acid prevents treated cells from storing fat again. This keeps your jawline slim and prevents fat from recurring.
