How it Works
Hair cycles through three different phases of growth: anagen, catagen, and telogen. Anagen is the growth phase where the hair bulb is intact, growing both upward and downward. Early anagen phase hair is when the bulb is closest to the surface of the skin, and contains the most melanin, or pigment. Laser hair removal is most effective on anagen phase hairs because the pigment is most effectively able to absorb the light that destroys the hair.
Understanding this helps you know why we must perform laser hair removal in The Woodlands as a series of treatments every 6 weeks. This allows the hairs that were in the catagen or telogen phase during a previous treatment to have time to go back into anagen phase and be eliminated by the laser.

Medical Aesthetics and Laser is wonderful. Since they are associated with a physician’s office they have a fantastic array of product and service choices. Kelli's knowledge and professionalism is unsurpassed. The office staff is welcoming and courteous- always giving each client the time that is needed.
Recently, at my annual appointment with the dermatologist, I was so very impressed and pleased. The Dr. commented on how great I was taking care of my skin. He had no idea that Allison and Kelli were taking care of my skin; I was just following their instructions with the regime they had advised! There are no professionals, or places, that I could more highly recommend than Allison and Kelli at Medical Aesthetics and Laser. My intent here is to pay it forward, just as my friend did, by her recommendation of Allison to me.
The average patient sees a 48% reduction in hair growth after 3 treatments and up to 80% lasting reduction after 6-8 treatments. Results will vary from patient to patient. After treatment completion, any remaining hair will usually be finer and lighter in color. Most patients require 1-2 touch up treatments each year.
Laser hair removal can last forever if you have touch up sessions as needed. Our patients are highly satisfied with the dramatic difference in their amount of hair after laser hair removal.
Depending on the body area, only 30% or less of your hair may be in the active growth phase at any given time. It will require a series of treatments to achieve the long-term improvement that you desire. We space these treatments 4-12 weeks apart based on your hair growth cycle.
Men and women of all ethnicities and skin types are candidates for laser hair removal. However, the best results are most commonly seen in the areas with thick, dark hair and lighter skin. Keep in mind that vellus hairs (AKA “peach fuzz”) and other transparent hairs cannot be removed with laser hair removal.
Most patients report that laser hair removal is less painful than waxing. The sensation is described as a rubber band snapping against the skin as the laser vaporizes your hairs. While the treatment is generally well tolerated without anesthetic, we can provide a topical anesthetic cream, if needed to ensure your comfort. Our laser hair removal specialists work quickly and efficiently to minimize your discomfort from the treatment.
Laser hair removal is much faster than electrolysis. Since electrolysis can only treat one hair at a time, the process is much longer than using a laser, which treats many hairs per laser pulse. The underarms can be treated in about 20 minutes with laser hair removal.
Treatment costs can vary depending on your unique needs. Your Medical Aesthetics & Laser specialist will provide you with the exact cost of your laser hair removal treatments up front in your initial consultation. We can also accept CareCredit to cover the cost of the procedure.
It is true laser technology used to be focused on treating light skin and dark hair but there have been advancements since then. Doing the research to find the right type of laser to treat dark skin can get complicated but in light of this, people with dark skin can see long-term hair reduction as well. The success lies within the expertise of the technician and the laser used. So if you have darker skin, don’t let people tell you laser hair removal won’t work! Simply seek laser hair removal in The Woodlands from professionals who understand your unique skin.
Just put the laser down and nobody gets hurt.
First, at-home laser hair removal works on a very narrow range of skin tones and hair colors. That means if you have darker skin or lighter hair, you will not see results. Plus, even if you have a contrast between your skin and hair, at-home lasers aren’t nearly as powerful as professional ones. That means you’ll have to continuously maintain the small results you see, which may add up to the same amount of time as shaving or waxing!
But more importantly, you can really hurt yourself if you try laser hair removal at home. You’re much more likely to experience harmful side effects of lasers if you treat yourself. Laser hair removal in The Woodlands requires expert care and training, and if you don’t know what you’re doing, you could risk more time and money to fix what could go wrong.
You can expect to see the beginning of results from laser hair removal within 1 to 2 weeks. Because your hair grows in cycles, we always recommend a series of treatments to continue the amount of hair loss.
Some typical side effects of laser hair removal include a mild sunburn-like sensation (redness), accompanied by some minor swelling immediately following the treatment. This doesn’t always happen, but if it does, it often occurs with thicker hairs and the swelling usually appears around each hair follicle. This is a good thing, indicating an effective treatment where the follicle has been destroyed!
You’re free to return to normal activities once you leave the office. However, the inflammation that sometimes accompanies laser hair removal can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. You should exercise the usual sun precautions by avoiding prolonged exposure and using sunscreen. Your provider at Medical Aesthetics & Laser in The Woodlands will discuss all these details with you before scheduling a treatment.
